Il comando è hwinfo (da installare via synaptic se non installato).  Al solito, aiuto con il comando man hwinfo

Io ho un modello simile al tuo (un Intel Core2 Duo @ 2.26GHz; con 4 GB di Ram) e dopo vari test mi sono accorto che le release a 64-bit faticavano non poco, pertanto ti consiglierei di rimanere sulle più performanti, per il nostro procio, 32-bit.

Per rispondere alla tua domanda, si, per riuscire si riesce ad installare anche una 64, ma se per esempio usi programmi di virtualizzazione ti accorgi subito che le prestazioni sono scarse. In quanto al DE potresti tentare con MATE o XFCE che sono più leggeri e performanti di altri.

Per quanto riguarda l'installazione di distribuzioni a 64 bit, è una questione di risorse hardware;
avere un sistema a 64 bit è, di fatto, inutile su computer con meno di 4 Gib di RAM ed una CPU con meno di 2,4 Ghz
anche quando le richieste del "prioduttore" sono inferiori

No problem, meglio ascoltare prima i grandi "vecchi" (senza offesa Tongue ) del Forum.

In pratica dato che il sistema supporta si i 64-bit, ma sono al limite, quindi navigazione più lenta, virtualizzazione che stenta, etc. puoi ripiegare su UPLOS, che non è altri che una versione a 32-bit di PcLinuxOs, con supporto non ufficiale (della community), questo ovviamente per rimanere nei confini di Pclos. In alternativa ci sono tante distro con supporto a 32-bit, anche se stanno poco a poco calando di numero.

Se opti per Uplos ci sono versioni già pronte, come questa di Zafran
